According to local Ardfield Soccer Club historians. The first soccer club representing the parish competed in various friendlies and pub tournaments and their home games were played in the grounds of Denis O’Leary (Ardfield).
The official start of Ardfield Football Club, however, was in 1987 when founding members John O’Donovan, Denis O’Connor, Michael Smokie O’Connor and Jimmy Butler decided to enter a club into the West Cork League.
The first official pitch was given to the club by Denis O’Donovan (Clooncunnig) and the four innovators were joined by Gerry O’Sullivan, Larry White and Tom White in preparing the pitch. With the help of John O’Driscoll (Little Island) who donated the goalposts, Martin Kingston donating the nets and Michael Hurley supplying the first set of jerseys.
With footballs and cash donations from many parishioners Ardfield Football Club was born and ready to compete.
However with work ongoing at the pitch Ardfield had to play their first ‘home’ match in Ahiohill. Losing to Bellmount 4-1 and with Ger O’Sullivan writing himself into history by scoring Ardfield’s first ever competitive goal.
